Wie kann eine Buchseite in den dreidimensionalen Raum übersetzt werden? Die Gruppenausstellung
BOOK_SPACES stellt Buchprojekte aus unterschiedlichen Kulturräumen vor und rückt die partizipativen und
demokratischen Möglichkeiten des Mediums in den Fokus. Die Künstler:innen übersetzen die Seiten mithilfe
performativer und installativer Praktiken in den musealen und städtischen Raum und machen im Zusammenspiel
von Fotografie mit Film, Sound, Text, Zeichnung und Performance die Vielschichtigkeit der gezeigten Perspektiven
sichtbar. Die Auseinandersetzung mit Familiengeschichte(n), der eigenen Identität und deren Wahrnehmung
innerhalb der Gesellschaft sowie das Hinterfragen von stereotypen Bildwelten und sozialen Rollenmustern sind
Themenfelder der Ausstellung.

Die Arbeit Rato Tesoura Pistola von Pedro Guimarães (*1977) kombiniert Zeichnungen mit Fotografien
und kann als familiäres Gemeinschaftsprojekt des Künstlers und seiner beiden Kinder betrachtet
werden. Sarai Meyron (*1995) setzt sich in ihrer Audio-Installation im Museumsgarten No Words of
Warmth / Keine wärmenden Worte mit der eigenen jüdischen Identität auseinander und untersucht
den Einfluss der Vergangenheit und der eigenen Migrationsgeschichte auf die gelebte Gegenwart. Die
eigene Familiengeschichte ist auch Ausgangspunkt der Arbeit von Lebohang Kganye (*1990) – in einer
Art performativen Praxis übernimmt sie die Posen ihrer verstorbenen Mutter auf alten Familienfotografien
an den jeweiligen Orten ihrer Entstehung. Während das Buchprojekt One Day Every Day von
Zuzana Pustaiová (*1990) sich auf kritische und zugleich humorvolle Weise mit sozialen Rollenmustern
und Stereotypen in unserer Gegenwart auseinandersetzt, ist die westliche Warnehmung asiatischer
Kultur Ausgangspunkt für die Befragung der eigenen Identität in der für die Ausstellung entwickelten
Installation She sang a song while I was dreaming von Hien Hoang (*1990). In seinem Buch Tofu Knife
setzt sich Kohei Kawatani (*1992) mit Fragen der Wahrnehmung des fotografischen Bildes im
digitalen Zeitalter auseinander und bespielt mit seiner Installation den museualen als auch den
angrenzenden öffentlichen Raum. In ebendiesem öffentlichen Raum in Braunschweig nimmt das
Projekt HRTLND von Mads Holm (*1990) das Verhältnis von fiktiver und realer Stadtraumgestaltung
in den Blick.
In einem Leerstand in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Museum wird unter dem Titel FIRST PAGES zusätzlich
eine Auswahl von Fotobüchern von Studierenden der Hochschulen Hannover und Dortmund gezeigt.

How can a book page be translated into three-dimensional space? The group exhibition BOOK_SPACES presents
book projects from different cultural spaces and focuses on the participatory and democratic possibilities of the medium.
The artists transform the pages into exhibition and urban spaces using installation and performative practices to render
visible the complexity of various perspectives through the interplay of photography with film, sound, text and drawing as well as performance. The examination of family history(s), personal identity and societal perception as well as the questioning of
stereotypical image worlds and societal roles are thematic fields within the exhibition.

The work Rato Tesoura Pistola by Pedro Guimarães (*1977) combines drawings with photographs and can be seen as a familial
joint project by the artist and his two children. Sarai Meyron (*1995) deals with her own Jewish identity in the audio installation
No Words of Warmth / keine wärmenden Worte in the museum garden and examines the influence of the past and her own
migration history on the lived present. Lebohang Kganye’s (*1990) own family history is also the starting point for her work – in a
kind of performative practice, she adopts the poses of her deceased mother in old family photographs at the respective places
where they were taken. While the book project One Day Every Day by Zuzana Pustaiová (*1990) deals with social role patterns and stereotypes in our present in a critical and at the same time humorous way, the Western perception of Asian culture is the
starting point for the questioning of one’s own identity in the installation She sang a song while I was dreaming by Hien Hoang (*1990),
which was especially developed for the exhibition. In his book Tofu Knife, Kohei Kawatani (*1992) deals with questions of the
perception of the photographic image in the digital age and uses both the museum space and the adjacent public space for his
installation. It is precisely in this public space in Braunschweig where the project HRTLND by Mads Holm (*1990) looks at the
relationship between fictional and real urban space.

In a vacant space in the immediate vicinity of the museum, a selection of photo books by students from the universities of Hanover
and Dortmund will also be presented under the title FIRST PAGES.
