Ukraine, Kyiv, Square of Independence. March 2014.
Nikolai, 28 years old, from Svalyava, Ukraine. Works as guard. Took part in the events at the Square since 1 of March 2014. For the project “Alphabet of Shared Words” chose and illustrated a word “pomidor” (tomato).
People who took part in the revolution in Kyiv at the Square of Independence in November 2013 – February 2014 name words which are the same both in Russian and Ukrainian languages, and choose an object and a background to be photographed with in order to create illustrations of these words. Images form a sort of collective ABC or alphabet of shared words for two nationalities. The project is a search for means of understanding and the point where it starts in a time of a strong political confrontation between Russia and Ukraine in 2014 that influenced relationships of friends and relatives from both sides and caused a lot of misunderstanding and hatred among common people.
